Urban Development that will Become a Legacy of the Tokyo 2020 Games

The site of the former Olympic Village in Harumi, where athletes from around the world gathered during the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games, is being developed into a vibrant community where diverse groups, including families with children, the elderly, and foreigners, can interact and live actively. This development is advancing as a legacy of the Games, making use of its proximity to the city center and open location by the sea.
Additionally, hydrogen is being introduced as a key energy source for the area, promoting the realization of a model for an environmentally advanced city.

Introduction of Hydrogen Energy

In this area, in addition to supplying power from the grid, hydrogen will be supplied to each block via a pipeline from the hydrogen refueling station, and electricity generated from pure hydrogen fuel cells will be used in the shared areas of residential buildings.
On March 27, 2024, the Tokyo Harumi Hydrogen Refueling Station opened, and a hydrogen supply system for large fuel cell vehicles such as Tokyo BRT and Toei Bus was established. On March 29, 2024, the first-ever hydrogen supply via pipeline to blocks began in practical use in Japan.

A new urban space is being created, close to the city center and facing the sea.
Expectations are growing for advanced urban development that will pioneer a low-carbon society utilizing hydrogen.
