How TOKYO LIP BALM Is Made

1 Production of Green Hydrogen

One of the ingredients used in TOKYO LIP BALM is produced through a hydrogenation process that uses “green hydrogen”.
Hydrogen is already widely used in the manufacturing of everyday products, including foods and cosmetics. However, most of the hydrogen used today is grey hydrogen, which is derived from fossil fuels.
In this project, we took on a new challenge: using Tokyo-produced green hydrogen made by electrolyzing water with renewable electricity. By incorporating green hydrogen into the manufacturing process, TOKYO LIP BALM demonstrates how cleaner hydrogen can be used in products we encounter in our daily lives.

TOKYO LIP BALM Ingredients:
Triethylhexanoin, Hydrogenated Polyisobutene, Mineral Oil, Diphenylsiloxy Phenyl Trimethicone, Diisostearyl Malate, Synthetic Wax, Diisostearyl/Phytosteryl Dimer Dilinoleate, Microcrystalline Wax, DPG, Tocopherol, Dimethicone, Aluminum Hydroxide, BHT, Titanium Dioxide, Iron Oxides, Blue 1

TOKYO LIP BALM contains
hydrogenated polyisobutene, which provides moisturizing effects.
Hydrogenated polyisobutene is produced by "hydrogenation," that is, by adding hydrogen to polyisobutene.
This hydrogenation process enables the product to achieve consistent quality.

What Is Hydrogenation?

Polyisobutene is a type of hydrocarbon, and polyisobutene tends to oxidize easily and absorb odors.
This is because the molecules of polyisobutene readily bond with other molecules, such as oxygen.

By bonding hydrogen to these polyisobutene molecules, it prevents other molecules, such as oxygen, from further bonding with them.
This process highly stabilizes the quality of the polyisobutene.

This hydrogenation technology is indispensable for ensuring the safety and stability of many food and medical products, as well as most petroleum-based and bio-based fuels.
While there are relatively few products in which hydrogen is the main raw material, there are a great many cases where hydrogen plays an essential role in the manufacturing process.

The "green hydrogen" used in the ingredients of TOKYO LIP BALM is produced at the Tokyo Keihinjima Green Hydrogen Plant, which opened in October 2025.
